DESCRIPTION:We will be making crepes to celebrate La Chandeleur. \nEvery year on February 2\, France observes La Chandeleur\, a.k.a. Candlemas\, a.k.a. a day dedicated to eating crêpes. The Catholic religious holiday is exactly 40 days after Christmas\, but it also has origins in an older pre-Christian holiday celebrating the harvest and marking the midway point of winter. As a result\, the current La Chandeleur is a mix of both of these traditions\, which eventually evolved into a day revolving around the crêpe—the round shape represents the sun and the circle of life\, while the act of eating and sharing with others commemorates a historical tradition of popes giving food out to the poor every year on February 2.

It derives from the Pennsylvania Dutch superstition that if a groundhog emerging from its burrow on this day sees its shadow due to clear weather\, it will retreat to its den and winter will persist for six more weeks\, and if it does not see its shadow because of cloudiness\, spring will arrive early. \nChildren will learn about the celebration at school.
