Tongyu Zhang is a compassionate and creative bilingual educator dedicated to supporting young children’s learning and well-being. She is currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Communication & Education at Teachers College, Columbia University, where she also serves as a Research Fellow at the Centre on Chinese Education. Tongyu brings a strong foundation in child development, classroom support, and play-based learning, along with a deep passion for fostering joyful and inclusive early childhood environments.
Before joining Tessa, Tongyu worked in a variety of bilingual and cross-cultural educational settings, including afterschool programs, online learning environments, and early childhood classrooms. She has supported more than 100 students across diverse backgrounds, engaging them through creative play, art, language activities, and positive behavior guidance. Her experience includes assisting teachers, collaborating closely with families, and helping children build confidence, communication skills, and curiosity.
Tongyu holds a Kindergarten Principal Qualification Certificate and a Children’s Psychological Counselor certification from China, complementing her hands-on experience in early childhood education. She also earned her Honors Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto, where she studied Art History, Visual Cultures, Media Studies, and Studio Arts.
At Tessa, Tongyu is excited to contribute to a warm, multilingual learning environment where children feel supported, safe, and inspired to explore. Her interests include children’s literature, storytelling, and integrating art and music into everyday learning.
